I have come to think you can tell more about someone by how they look at the world than by where they are from. Mine was shaped in Madrid, unsettled early on by two seasons in Singapore and Seoul, and has settled, for now, into Amsterdam.

Beauty is how I know where to look. For years, looking was enough. I was a devoted dilettante, content to leave what I found where I found it. Then I was not anymore: I wanted to keep it, and give it back through my own eye.

With people, I am after something truer still: the soul, surfacing briefly through the physical, real simply for having been caught. I have always been moved by how little of our existence stays. That being the impermanence of things. There is a Japanese phrase for that particular ache, mono no aware: the tenderness of things precisely because they do not last. A photograph holds a stillness that will not happen twice. It is proof the moment existed at all, what Barthes called “ça a été”. A memory made tangible, one I can return to endlessly.
